We Return Fighting: World War I and the Shaping of Modern Black Identity, for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), documents the WWI experience told through the lens of African American soldiers, and how they hoped to live out post-Civil War expectations. It’s the companion publication to museum’s We Return Fighting exhibition that opens on December 13th, 2019.
The book uses contemporary clean typography, incorporating illustrations, photos and artifacts from the exhibition and museum’s collection. There is a gatefold timeline that hilights key events in the African American military history and the fight for civil-rights from 1864 through 1964.
The cover features an image of the Harlem Hellfighters, as they return home from WWI, the image is overlaid with bold typography.
